former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) worker took legal action on Thursday against the organization, its founder Vince McMahon, and a former executive. The lawsuit claims sexual trafficking and abuse by McMahon and the executive, John Laurinaitis. Janel Grant, the former employee, accuses them of physical and emotional mistreatment.
Her lawyer, Ann Callis, emphasized the organization’s complicity in the abuse. McMahon’s spokesperson denies the allegations, calling them lies. The lawsuit alleges that McMahon exploited his position, promising career advancements to Grant in exchange for a physical relationship.
In a seismic development within the world of professional wrestling, a former employee of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has filed a lawsuit against the company, its iconic founder Vince McMahon, and a former WWE executive. The suit alleges egregious acts of sex trafficking and abuse, shedding light on a disturbing chapter within the realm of sports entertainment.
Janel Grant, the courageous plaintiff, asserts that she endured physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault, and trafficking during her tenure at WWE. The lawsuit was officially lodged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut, seeking accountability from McMahon, the former CEO, and John Laurinaitis, another high-ranking executive.
Ann Callis, the attorney representing Janel Grant, conveyed the gravity of the allegations in a statement to NBC News. “Today’s complaint seeks to hold accountable two WWE executives who sexually assaulted and trafficked Plaintiff Janel Grant, as well as the organization that facilitated or turned a blind eye to the abuse and then swept it under the rug,” remarked Callis.
The lawsuit not only aims to seek justice for Grant but also carries the weight of a broader purpose. Callis indicated that Grant’s fervent hope is that the legal action will act as a deterrent, preventing other women from falling victim to similar abuses within the wrestling industry.
In a separate statement, the parent company of WWE, TKO Group Holdings, distanced McMahon from the day-to-day operations of WWE, stating, “Mr. McMahon does not control TKO nor does he oversee the day-to-day operations of WWE.” The company acknowledged the gravity of the allegations and assured that they were addressing the matter internally.
The allegations in the lawsuit span a range of serious charges, including sex trafficking, civil battery, intentional or negligent infliction of emotional distress, and negligence. According to the details laid out in the lawsuit, the disturbing saga began in March 2019 when Grant encountered McMahon, who was then the CEO of WWE.
The suit alleges that McMahon, in a position of power, made promises of career advancements while engaging in increasingly inappropriate behavior towards Grant.
